Challenges

U.S. Bank needed to continually improve its digital credit card experience while maintaining consistency within a complex enterprise environment. Key challenges included:

  • Implementing design changes that could be validated through data
  • Creating reusable components for the AEM design system
  • Navigating a rigorous multi-tier approval process for design changes
  • Balancing innovation with technical and corporate constraints
  • Ensuring seamless integration between design vision and technical implementation

My role in the projects

Working closely with developers, UX researchers, A11Y, and marketing analysts, I:

  • Designed updates to credit card pages based on user data and business goals
  • Created and refined components for the AEM design system
  • Collaborated on A/B test design and implementation
  • Navigated the UX department's tiered approval process
  • Analyzed test results to inform future design decisions

Process & Methods

Data-driven design iteration

My design process was guided by actual user behavior data:

  • Collaborated with the UX research team to understand user pain points
  • Analyzed marketing data to identify conversion barriers
  • Designed targeted updates to address specific user experience challenges
  • Created multiple design options for A/B testing
  • Refined designs based on test results and user feedback

A/B testing & analysis

Each design change was validated through careful testing:

  • Worked with developers to implement testable design variations
  • Ensured test parameters would yield actionable insights
  • Monitored test results for user retention and conversion "lift"
  • Documented successful approaches for future implementation
  • Communicated results and insights to broader stakeholders

AEM component development

Creating components for the design system required precision and collaboration:

  • Designed components that balanced visual appeal with technical feasibility
  • Documented component behaviors and responsive considerations
  • Guided components through the Tier 1 and Tier 2 review processes
  • Collaborated with developers to resolve implementation challenges
  • Refined components based on reviewer feedback

Rigorous review process

The UX department's multi-tier review system ensured quality and consistency:

  • Prepared comprehensive presentations for design reviews
  • Defended design decisions with data and user-centered rationales
  • Incorporated feedback from Tier 1 reviewers before advancing
  • Collaborated across departments to build consensus
  • Maintained design integrity while accommodating technical requirements

Results

My work with the development team resulted in:

  • Successful implementation of design changes that improved user engagement metrics
  • Creation of reusable components that enhanced the U.S. Bank design system
  • Establishment of efficient workflows between design and development
  • Data-validated improvements to the credit card digital experience
  • Better collaboration between UX, marketing, and development teams

Working at the intersection of design and development deepened my understanding of the entire implementation process and taught me how to create designs that can be efficiently implemented within complex enterprise systems.
